In recent months we've had loads of emails and calls from people wanting to get involved in LMHR in the North East. From Durham to Newcastle, Sunderland to Darlington there are loads of musicians, music fans, organisations and people who want We thought it might be an idea to try to introduce those of you who don't already know each other so you can support one another's events and activities, so ... On Saturday 13th January at 2pm, we're holding a LMHR get-together at Northumbria University Students Union - 2 Sandyford Road Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 8SB.

This Sunday, September 9th, will see a very special joint LMHR/UAF event, taking place as part of the social events for this year's Trades Union Congress. The event will feature Get Cape Wear Cape Fly playing live, as well as Specials legend Jerry Dammers DJing, and another liver performance from the excellent Nu-MCs. Trade union leaders and campaigners will be speaking briefly between the acts to outline the UAF & LMHR campaigns to stop the fascist BNP around next year's Greater London Assembly and local council elections. The event is taking place at Brighton's Revenge club. Entry is free to TUC delegates, or by donation to everyone else.

The first central London RAR gig took place almost 30 years ago to the day at the Royal College of Art. We now face an even greater fascist threat than the National Front were at that time - the BNP have 49 councillors nationwide and got 800,000 votes nationwide in recent elections. Racism and Islamophobia are rife. So it's a good time to remember how we beat the Nazis last time and discuss how we can organise to do the same today. On Wednesday, the Royal College of Arts and hosting a screening of the RAR/LMHR DVD by Alan Miles "Who Shot the Sheriff?" with the director himself, Specials legend Jerry Dammers and an LMHR speaker doing a Q&A afterwards. That'll be followed by a DJ set from Jerry Dammers celebrating Jamaican music of the last 30 years and more.

JERRY DAMMERS CELEBRATES HONORARY DEGREE WITH LAUNCH OF COVENTRY ANTI RACIST MUSIC CAMPAIGN DJ SET AND ROCK AGAINST RACISM FILM A new initiative to support musicians opposing racism will be launched at an event headlined by Jerry Dammers, founder and keyboard player of Coventry Two Tone legends The Specials. Jerry will be celebrating receiving on that day his honorary degree from Coventry University. Jerry will be dejaying a selection of Jamaican influenced music from the 60’s to the jungle and dubsters of today (with a little Two Tone thrown in). The evening will begin with a screening of the film “Who Shot the Sheriff”, a history of Rock Against Racism made by fire-fighter and self-taught film maker Alan Miles. The launch at DOGMA, Fairfax Street, Coventry on Monday 20th November (8PM) will be part of a growing momentum behind the national Love Music Hate Racism campaign. The launch will be followed by a major live event at Warwick University on Tuesday 28th November (featuring amongst others, Akala, the MOBO awards best hip hop act).

"Who Shot the Sheriff?" - the Rock Against Racism documentary film 6.30pm, Thursday 9th November, African Caribbean Centre, Highfields, Leicester Guest speakers include Iris Lightfoote (LREC Director), Donna Guthrie (Unite Against Fascism - 'UAF'), plus local campaigners and LMHR musicians. CELEBRATE THE 70th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF CABLE STREET

On the 4 October 1936, the people of the East End of London prevented Oswald Mosley and his British Union of Fascists from marching through Cable Street in Stepney, then a mainly Jewish area. This happened just three months after the start of the Spanish Civil War when people from all over the world went to Spain to fight General Franco and his fascists in a prelude to the Second World War. In Spain and in the East End the same slogan was used: NO PASARAN! THEY SHALL NOT PASS!


MS DYNAMITE IN LMHR VISITS TO BARKING & DAGENHAM SCHOOLS

On Friday 14th July, Ms Dynamite will be addressing the whole school assembly at a secondary school in Barking & Dagenham on the need to combat racism and fascism inside and outside our schools. There will also be LMHR and Unite Against Fascism guest speakers and a screening of the short version of LMHR film Who Shot the Sheriff, followed by a Q&A with the Mercury-winning rapper/singer. The same morning, there will also be a similar event featuring Liverpool r&b group Fade 2, taking place at another school in the area. These will be the first of a whole series of LMHR events in schools across the borough.
