John McClure aka The Reverend has curated a stellar line-up of top, largely Yorkshire-based artists, as a response to the fascist BNP winning two council seats in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The mega-gig takes place at Rotherham’s Magna venue on Saturday 6th September. The final batch of 500 tickets will go on sale on Saturday 23rd August in Rotherham, to local (Sheffield, Rotherham or Barnley) based residents only.
A special box office will be open from 11am to 3pm for people to buy tickets at £10 on a cash-only basis (maximum 4 per person), at:
All Saints Centre, Vicarage Lane, Rotherham (in the Minster courtyard).
Bands confirmed are Reverend & the Makers, Roll Deep, The Courteeners and Cabaret Voltaite - with one very special headline act as well as a lineup of top DJs still to be announced.
Rotherham MP, John Healey said: “I am pleased to back what promises to be a great event with such an important message.
“It is great to see big names in music coming to Rotherham and I hope as many local people as possible will go along, enjoy themselves and show their support.”
John McClure, The Reverend, said: “You think how music has changed in the last 50 years and we would have none of that mixture of music and culture if the likes of the BNP had their way. People seem to be wanting to vote almost as a protest, but they don’t want to get into the hands of the BNP. So we thought rather than do the event in Sheffield we would do it in Rotherham and say to these people ‘We don’t want you here, we don’t want your fascist s**t.”
A spokesperson for Rotherham LMHR said: “We are expecting big queues on Saturday for these tickets and we have loads more exciting big names playing that we are waiting to announce over the coming weeks. We though it was only right that the people of Rotherham and Sheffield had first chance to buy the tickets. This is a chance for people in South Yorkshire to say loud and clear that the BNP and their disgusting policies of hatred and division are not welcome here. On the afternoon of September 6 at Magna there will also be workshops and discussions where we can plan an ongoing campaign to oppose the BNP, leading up to a big Northern Carnival next year to coincide with the European elections. We have also had fantastic support from Unite and other trade unions so far.”
