BNP candidate “possessed explosives”
A candidate for the BNP in last year’s council elections has pleaded guilty to possessing explosives. Robert Cottage from Colne, Lancashire, had assembled a stockpile of chemicals in preparation for “civil war” in Britain. The trial is on-going as Cottage denies a further count of conspiracy to cause an explosion. The police also uncovered a guide to making several types of bomb, air pistols, crossbows and a number of ball bearings which the prosecution claim could be used as shrapnel for explosive devices.
A statement given to police by Mrs Cottage said her husband held “strong views on immigration”.
While there is no direct connection, this case will remind many people of David Copeland. This former-BNP member launched a wave of nail bomb attacks on London in his twisted attempt to “cause a racial war”. Three people were killed and more than 120 injured during his three bomb attacks.
Whatever the outcome of the current case, the nature of the BNP and those who stand for it is, again, under a much needed spotlight.
