THE ENEMY CONDEMN NAZI “HISTORIAN”‘S PROPOSED VISIT TO COVENTRY
On the night of 14th November 1940 over 500 Nazi German bombers launched an assault on the city of Coventry that would leave nearly 600 dead and 900 injured. Mass burials took place on 2 occasions, and many of the dead lie in the city’s London Road Cemetery. Yet notorious holocaust denier David Irving has chosen the anniversary of that dreadful night to visit Coventry and celebrate his disgusting Nazi theories.
Coventry Unite Against Fascism have called a protest against Irving (see the Events section for details), supported by West Midlands LMHR, and top Cov band & LMHR supporters The Enemy - recemt contributors to the LMHR/NME CD - have been quick to speak out against Irving’s visit. Fellow Coventry music legend, The Specials’ Jerry Dammers is also supporting the protests.
Singer Tom Clarke said, “It is somewhat appropriate that a man with so little brains, Like David Irving, chooses to turn up in Coventry on the anniversary of the Luftwaffe killing 600 Coventry locals. Stupid because, if I was David Irving I would realise that turning up in a city as proud as Coventry spouting his usual Nazi nonsense on the very day that hundreds of people with relatives still alive in this city perished was not very sensible. I for one would welcome a frank exchange of views with Irving”.
For many years Irving has appeared before groups of Neo-Nazis to promote his racist ideas. He has claimed that the gas chambers at Auschwitz were a myth, and later that Hitler did not know what was gong on. He has been banned from Germany, Australia, Italy, Canada, Austria and New Zealand. He was recently jailed for Holocaust denial in Austria.
