TOP ARTISTS AND SPEAKERS CONFIRMED FOR SATURDAY’S NATIONAL DEMO & CARNIVAL PARADE - PLUS ROUTE MAP CONFIRMED
Top musicians, and political, religious, lesbian and gay and faith group leaders willl join thousands of other people from across the country on Saturday’s LMHR/Unite Against Facism “Stop the Fascist BNP” march and parade. Babyshambles, Reverend & The Makers, Mecca 2 Medina, The Paddingtons, Adelaide McKenzie and many more will march and perform, while speakers include the TUC’s Frances O’Grady, Unite union leader Derek Simpson, film director Gurdinder Chadha, CWU postal workers’ leader Billy Hayes, John McDonnell MP, Mark Serwotka leader of civil service union PCS, Claude Moraes MEP, Dr Abdul Bari of the Muslim Council of Britain, and many others.
TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:
“The TUC is supporting the national march against fascism and racism because we believe that we all have a responsibility to stand up to the politics of hate. Unions are campaigning in workplaces and in communities across the UK to raise awareness among colleagues and local residents of the threat posed by parties of the far right. The British National Party’s success in the recent London Assembly elections coupled with its small but continued progress across the country is symptomatic of the wider discrimination, prejudice and racism that continues to disfigure British life and we are determined to make sure that it does not become an accepted part of electoral politics.”
LMHR-supporting musicians and campaigners yesterday launched an Eviction Notice to the BNP’s Richard Barnbrook & other fascist councillors that they are not wanted on our councils and in our communities.
Sam Duckworth - Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly., said:
“It’s quite easy to get caught up in words and to try and over-articulate something very simple. i don’t want a facist organisation beeing involved in the running of London, or any borough for that matter. Notice is being served; it’s time to get the BNP out of the GLA and out of politics altogether.”
Steve Hart, London and Eastern Regional Secretary of Unite the Union said:
“Ninety-five percent of Londoners have voted to keep the BNP out of City Hall. A worrying five percent have been conned by this party of thugs and bombers. Trade Unions will not stop campaigning to defeat the BNP.
London-based muslimn rapper Sab-o-tage said:
“London is recognised as being one of the most multi-cultured and diverse cities in the world. the idea of a fascist organisation trying to implement their racist policies, even through violence, is one that should not be accepted on any scale. Being a Muslim poet, my poetry reflects what it is like to be British Muslim and tries to remove the prejudice that some peeople have of Islam.”
Gary Powell of Dirty Pretty Things, said:
“We should show pride in our ethnic diversity, pride in the fact that we are one of the world’s first melting ppots, pride in our temples, gurdwaras and mosques and pride in our achievement as British people of any colour, creed or religion.”
